What to expect:  

We have been hard at work to ensure everyone knows that we are bringing your community fiber optic internet! More importantly, we are bringing speeds up to 1,000 Mbps. This means that you will have an opportunity to get internet that is several times faster than anything seen in town before!  

To prepare your community for the future, new fiber-optic infrastructure is deeply important. To ensure this massive upgrade lasts decades, we will bury this infrastructure! Unfortunately, even in the best weather conditions, installing new underground infrastructure is hard and dangerous work, here is what you need to know about the project. 

Progress so Far

Since our previous update, our team has remained hard at work to build, and connect High Prairie residents to a network that can truly support them.  If you’ve already signed up we’ll be reaching out as soon as we can to book your installation!

Construction is largely wrapped up on the north side of town but there is still some splicing to do (connecting active fiber network to the inactive constructed network) and we will continue to update progress on a weekly basis on our Facebook page here. You can expect to see the crews working along the south side of the highway this June while splicing in the north is completed!

Our drop crews will be working ahead of our middle-mile construction to get you connected faster as well! Regardless of where you are in the community, you may see flags pop up in your yard if you’ve registered for service. This is so we can get your drop in place, and get your house prepared for connection ahead of network construction. That way, as soon as the network is fully constructed in your neighborhood we can call you right away to book your installation!

There are  a few more things you should know and expect as we get to work in your neighbourhood:

 

Flagging  

Before the project begins down your alleys, side streets, and the drop comes into your yard, you will see flags begin to pop up all around. This is the first step at installation your drop, and if you’ve registered for services you will be notified when we start this process for your home. These flags are incredibly important as it tells the construction crew where important infrastructure, like gas and electric, is located. If you see these flags, please ensure that you do not touch or remove them from the ground. If a crew is unable to see a flag or the utilities below it could cause serious damage to your utilities or cause harm to the crew! If you would like to let us know about private utilities on your property where we will be building, please call our main line and let our team know. Installing the drop

This is the easy part! We don’t need access to the home, so no appointment is needed. We will be able to complete this based on our techs availability. Our crew will come by and knock/ring first before getting to work. They will install the conduit from our access point to just outside of your home. They do this by making use of a vibratory plow, to install the fiber cable just beneath the ground. All you’ll see is an orange piece sticking out of the ground ready for us to install the ONT, and your fiber services, indoors. From here we can book a technician to get your service up and running!

 

It Can Get Messy

Progress is going very well, but when working with hydrovacs it can sometimes get a little messy. Because we are building buried infrastructure under/in wet ground, progress on our new construction will require this to complete properly. Follow our Facebook page to keep yourself updated as we push through this spring to connect you sooner! 

Remediation  

We are building underground construction, which means we dig holes and small trenches for the fiber lines to run down! Although we deploy directional drills and vibratory plowing equipment that reduces the amount of soil turned, we still create a small mess. But fear not, we always remediate anything effected by our work and ensure that it will return to its healthiest form in suitable time.  

Our team will wait for the ground to properly settle after we’ve unturned it. This can take a few days, to a few weeks dependent on the weather. At that point, we set the earth to final grade and plant new seed for your lawn to regrow to its previous health! It is a small price we need to pay to keep construction moving so we can continue to connect homes and businesses as fast as possible!

Since our previous May update, our team has remained hard at work to build, and connect High Prairie residents to a network that can truly support them. With the fires in the surrounding area we did have some difficulties, but are remaining on track with our end of summer deadlines! We’ve gotten back to work with splicing, and customers along the north side of town are able to start getting connected to high speed fiber internet services. If you’ve already signed up we’ll be reaching out as soon as we can to book your installation!

Since our update in March, our team has remained hard at work to build, and connect High Prairie residents to a network that can truly support them. Despite the cold weather lingering, we’ve activated the first leg of our network as we continue to build more! Residents in Silverwood Crescent and up 58th Ave can register for internet services today! There is still some time to get your drop dug in (read below for more!) but as soon as that is complete, we can connect you to high speed fiber internet.

We are still progressing along 58th Ave, having just fully completed down 46 St. There is still some splicing to do on the north side of town (connecting active fiber network to the inactive constructed network) but we will continue to update progress on a weekly basis on our Facebook page here. If you’ve already registered for services, we will be calling to schedule your installation as soon as your street is active! Any breaking news will be shared as soon as we are able through our Facebook page as well.

Since our update in February, our team has remained hard at work to build, and connect High Prairie residents to a network that can support them. We’ve completed the initial leg into the residential areas of Pleasantview Drive and Silverwood Crescent! The middle-mile construction is going well down 54th Ave, getting the infrastructure in place for the first set of residents to light up. Our locate flagging has been completed down a good portion of 58th Ave, and you’ll see the crews branching down side streets as the work progresses. We will be continuing to work hard, and ramp up our work force and machinery, in order to hit our goal of connecting every High Prairie resident! Our timeline to get the whole town connected to our high speed fiber internet services is by the end of Summer 2023.

Our project was only announced 3 months ago, and we have broken ground on construction! Our team has been hard at work this winter to bury our fiber optics in the ground, completing our initial leg into the residential areas of Pleasantview Drive and Silverwood Crescent! The next step of the journey is to work along 58th Ave and into the neighborhoods and side streets on the north end of town. Our goal is to get every High Prairie resident connected to our fiber network as soon as possible, and we will be readily building throughout springtime!

What To Expect

Northern Lights Fiber is excited to bring you fiber optic internet, with speeds up to 10,000 Mbps (10 Gigabit symmetrical service!). To future proof your community, these types of speeds and reliability is an absolutely necessity. But it would not be possible with the infrastructure that exists today.

To prepare your community for the future, we will be required to build an entirely new fiber-optic infrastructure.

Utility Locates

Before we hit the ground running (and digging) we need to find out where it’s safe to do so. We rely on calling in utility locates to map out critical infrastructure and make sure we don’t strike anything that could disrupt, harm, or injure the community or our construction crews. You will see small flags along alley-ways, roadsides, and even through your yard if you request our service! This is to map out what to avoid, so we know where it’s safe to dig in our lightning fast fiber optic infrastructure. This process can take some time depending on the backlog of the government locate crew, but as soon as they’re performed you can expect to see us within the next few weeks to build and connect our network.

Main-Line

The first part of our construction is called “middle-mile” or “main-line” construction. You will see large equipment of ours, including “hydrovacs”, directional drills, dump trucks, front end loaders, skid steers, and even vibratory plows. Our design in High Prairie dictates that we will be digging in public easement, and most of our design, in the area, will be in back lanes.

There are some places that this is not possible. There may be a few places where our design determines that we will use front lot easement. This means we will have to dig along the curb of your front yard.

The Drop

Having fiber infrastructure will future proof your home for generations to come. And while cities already have this infrastructure, it is very rare for rural communities in Canada.

If you sign up for services during this process, we will also need to burry new infrastructure to your house. We call this “the drop.” We will also install a small box on the side of your house.

Can I get fiber to my house, even if I don’t want internet?

Yes! We want to future proof your community, and that includes building to as many houses as possible. You can sign an access agreement HERE, and pay a small fee to future proof your house (and very likely increase the property value)!

This will not only be good for your household and local businesses in High Prairie, but real estate studies strongly suggest the increase of property value when having this infrastructure to your rural home. In other words, many people now want to move to a quieter community but cannot sacrifice internet speed to do so. Now, High Prairie will be able to attract them!

What About My Property?

This is a big private investment to futureproof the Town of High Prairie, and it requires heavy duty construction. We will try to be as respectful as possible to everyone’s property and we will restore all landscaping to the best of our ability, properly backfilling, and replanting grass.

How Long Will it Take?

Build a world class fiber infrastructure can take some time! Main-line construction in High Prairie will continue through the winter and into 2023. That said, we should only be on each street for about a week at a time. Burying the drop to each house will only take about half a day.
